NSS Introduction

About NSS

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Government of India sponsored public service programme under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It provides students with opportunities to engage in community service and nation-building activities.

At ABVGIET Pragatinagar, the NSS Unit actively works towards developing students’ personalities through meaningful social engagement. The scheme establishes a strong link between campus and community, encouraging students to contribute to societal development while gaining practical exposure.

The core philosophy of NSS is “Education through Service”, enabling students to learn by actively participating in community welfare activities.

NSS History

The concept of involving students in national service dates back to the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi, who emphasized social responsibility alongside education. The National Service Scheme was formally launched in 1969, marking the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi.

Initially started with around 40,000 students in 37 universities, NSS has now grown into one of the largest youth movements in India, engaging millions of volunteers across universities and institutions

NSS Motto

The motto of NSS is:

“NOT ME, BUT YOU”

This reflects the essence of selfless service and democratic living, emphasizing that the welfare of an individual is dependent on the welfare of society. It encourages volunteers to place community needs above personal interests.

NSS Symbol

The NSS symbol is based on the Rath Wheel of the Konark Sun Temple (Odisha). It represents the cycle of creation, preservation, and progress, symbolizing continuous social transformation.

  • The eight spokes represent 24 hours, indicating readiness for service round the clock
  • The red colour signifies energy, enthusiasm, and spirit
  • The navy-blue colour represents the universe and NSS’s contribution to society

NSS Day

NSS Day is celebrated on 24th September every year, marking the official launch of the National Service Scheme in 1969.

On this day, various activities such as awareness campaigns, cleanliness drives, and social outreach programmes are conducted to reinforce the spirit of service among volunteers.

Objectives of NSS

The primary objective of NSS is personality development through community service. The specific objectives include:

  • To understand the community and identify its needs
  • To develop a sense of social and civic responsibility
  • To apply knowledge for solving real-life problems
  • To develop leadership qualities and teamwork
  • To promote national integration and social harmony

Message from NSS Programme Officer

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is not merely an activity; it is a platform that shapes students into responsible citizens with a strong sense of social commitment. At ABVGIET Pragatinagar, our NSS Unit is dedicated to fostering the spirit of selfless service, leadership, and community engagement among students.

Guided by the motto “Not Me, But You,” NSS encourages volunteers to step beyond the classroom and connect with society. Through various activities such as cleanliness drives, awareness campaigns, community outreach programmes, and special camps, students gain practical exposure to real-world challenges while contributing positively to society.

Our aim is to nurture socially conscious individuals who are not only academically competent but also ethically responsible and proactive in addressing community issues. NSS provides an excellent opportunity for students to develop teamwork, leadership qualities, and a sense of national integration.

I encourage all students to actively participate in NSS activities and make meaningful contributions towards building a cleaner, healthier, and more responsible society.
